Summary
Itsekiri NextGen has had outdoor games at the Warri City Stadium in one of the previous sessions, with a promise of indoor games in subsequent sessions. We thought it wise to have indoor games at the 2022 42nd session. The games were a combination of Scrabble, ludo, whot and water games with lots of fun and learning.
Session Delivery
After the opening prayer and the Itsekiri anthem, Uwala Tedeye came out to explain the importance of games. Though with games one can have fun but it goes beyond that. Some skills can be developed alongside having fun.
Some benefits of games are;
- Board games like Scrabble, monopoly, chess e.t.c helps to practice essential cognitive skills.
- Card games like whot improve cognitive stimulation, relieve stress, help socialization and help in risk-taking.
- Ludo Games help one’s calculation skills, resilience and risk-taking.
Mr. Emmanuel Fregene did an explicit explanation on how the Scrabble game is being played. He went further to explain the rules of the game to the participants as they were seated waiting to take their turn in the Scrabble game. Mr. Eworitsemogha Wyse was at the Scrabble table alongside Mr. Fregene to guide the participants. The participants contested with each other with a dictionary by their side. Some words that seem not to be correct get contested by some. Though others because of fear of losing their turn would rather not have such words contested. This game help to improve one’s vocabulary skills as well as risk-taking as they try to form words with the tiles they have at hand.
Mr. Emmanuel Egbe explained the rules of the Ludo game and its benefit as it helps One think fast, strategize, take a risk and improves calculation skills. The game can be played by two or four persons, but the participants decided to play in twos.
Omatsola Okpeyeaghan took charge of those playing card games (whot). This game was done on two tables by two different groups. It is one game that can be played by multiple people. It sure encourages socialization as well as risk-taking, strategizing and critical thinking.
Uwala Tedeye introduced a new game to the participants. Four empty 60 litres cans were provided with four pails of water. The participants were meant to fill the cans by scooping the water in the pail with their hands until the can is filled to the brim. After which they walk to the finishing line. The game teaches consistency and resilience. No matter how difficult a thing seems, with more effort and patience it will get done.
Key activities during the session
The participants had lots of fun during the indoor games session as they were all busy with one activity or the other. Some participants went around all the games, while a few were stuck to just Scrabble. It was fun, even as they learn while playing.
