Summary:
In keeping with its tradition, Itsekiri NextGen dedicated the last Saturday of September 2023 to reading and reviewing books. This monthly ritual encouraged participants to engage with literature and share their insights and impressions.
Session Delivery:
Many participants were already seated even before the arrival of the volunteers, some having made their way through the end of the environmental sanitation activities.
The participants took the initiative to lead the opening prayer and sing the Itsekiri anthem before Roseline Bemigho Ugbeye took the stage to discuss the previous session.
Books from the Itsekiri NextGen library were distributed among the participants, and they were instructed to begin reading immediately. They were granted a generous 50 minutes to delve into the books. While they read, Roseline Bemigho Ugbeye and other volunteers circulated around the hall, supervising and recording the names of participants.
Once the designated reading time concluded, the facilitator called participants out one by one based on the recorded list of names. Each participant willingly stepped forward to provide their book review. During their reviews, the facilitator asked questions about the book’s content and inquired about any new words or morals they had encountered.
An important aspect of each review was acknowledging and mentioning the book’s author and, if applicable, the illustrator’s name. This practice reinforced the importance of crediting the creators behind the literature.
Following the reviews, some participants were inspired to borrow books from the library based on the recommendations and insights they had gained from their peers.
