- Resource Person: Peace Iyebe
Summary:
Peace Iyebe, a youth ambassador, facilitated the session, providing participants with insights on etiquette and public speaking through practical examples.
Session Delivery:
Participants were eager to welcome a new facilitator. After the opening prayer and the Itsekiri anthem, Peace Iyebe was introduced to lead the session. She emphasized that etiquette simply means good manners and stressed the importance of learning these principles early in life, as they will shape their character into adulthood.
The session focused heavily on practical application, where each point discussed was illustrated with real-life examples. Participants were encouraged to incorporate the “five magic words” into their daily interactions: please, excuse me, sorry, thank you, and welcome.
For instance, when asked to retrieve a book from a table, one participant approached without permission, while another first said “excuse me” and asked for consent before picking it up. This exercise highlighted how asking for permission fosters respect and builds social skills.
Peace Iyebe explained that while the Itsekiri NextGen Project aims to cultivate confidence and boldness, it’s equally important to avoid rudeness. Key public speaking skills discussed included smiling, maintaining eye contact, and being assertive.
To reinforce these concepts, participants were invited to introduce themselves and summarize the session’s content. Their peers served as judges, eliminating those who struggled until only five finalists remained. These finalists were rewarded with cash gifts for their efforts.
