Date: November 2nd, 2024 Time: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM Location: Former Caravan 4, Aja-Pessu (Pessu Town), Warri Attendees: 54 participants, 4 volunteers Activity: Waste Management Workshop (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Facilitator: Debi Amadedon
Session Summary:
This session aimed to educate participants about the potential of waste as a resource through recycling and repurposing.
Session Details:
Following the opening prayer and the Itsekiri anthem, facilitator Debi Amadedon began the session by displaying used bottles and cans. He introduced the concept of waste management, explaining that improperly managed waste harms the environment and its inhabitants. Conversely, effective waste management can generate income and promote a healthy ecosystem.
Debi emphasized the potential for repurposing used bottles for selling packaged groundnuts or peanuts, and reusing drink cans for selling liquid soap. He also discussed how used drink containers can be crushed to create other products, and how even used bottles can be crushed and transformed into windscreens or other glass products.
The session also highlighted the often-overlooked income generated by scavengers, who collect and sell recyclable materials. Local provision shops were cited as examples of businesses that earn extra income by selling used cartons.
Participants watched informative videos showcasing various recycling processes and the transformation of waste into new products.
The session proved insightful, inspiring participants to reconsider their approach to waste and explore its potential.
