Session Delivery

The session, initially anchored by Itse Mirabel Ukubeyinje, began with an introduction to the local names of discrimination, such as “wayo,” “ojoro,” and “partiality.” She then introduced the guest facilitator, Dr. Tuoyo Ovie -Jack .

Dr. Tuoyo continued from where Itse left off, using a PowerPoint presentation with photo illustrations and minimal text. One photo showed children of different colors, races, and abilities playing together happily, including a girl in a wheelchair. Dr. Jack emphasized the importance of making everyone feel included, regardless of their condition, tribe, or status.

Another photo depicted well-dressed children playing together, while three poorly dressed children looked on angrily. Dr. Tuoyo asked the participants to interpret the photo, and after various attempts, she explained that the poorer children were excluded due to their socio-economic status, leading to feelings of sadness and depression.

Dr. Tuoyo highlighted the devastating effects of discrimination, including low self-esteem, trauma, depression, anxiety, and more. She stressed that non-discrimination and inclusivity have numerous benefits for society, such as innovation, creativity, improved well-being, increased diversity, and better decision-making.

To conclude the session, Dr  Tuoyo invited participants to share what they had learned. Sixteen people came forward, and 14 outstanding participants received cash gifts. The session served as a valuable lesson in the importance of resisting discrimination and embracing inclusivity.
